About Thekkady

This beautiful hill town is located in the eastern Idukki district of Kerala. Located near Kumily, it is an eco-tourism spot visited by tourists throughout the year. Tourists won’t get bored here even for a minute. There are a horde of activities to choose from – boat cruises on the Periyar River, tea and spice plantations tours, bamboo rafting, elephant safari, trekking and bird watching.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the Periyar Lake, also known as Thekkady Lake. It is an artificial lake, where boating is organized by the government. On a two-hour-long cruise you can spot herds of elephants, groups of sambar deer and wild boars. The tiger is the king of this sanctuary. The Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Other animals you can see are lion-tailed macaques, gaurs, and Nilgiri langurs.

The sanctuary, which covers about 777sq.km of area, consists of evergreen forests for the most part. Tourists can treat themselves to trekking and elephant rides. The Mullaperiyar Dam is built across the Periyar River. It supplies water to Kerala as well as parts of neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
