With about 300 tigers to be protected, Karnataka has set up the first ever commando force – Special Tiger Protection Force – to protect the tigers. Trained in hand-to-hand combat, use of SLRs and small arms, they are currently positioned in the forests of Bandipur, Badra and Nagarhole. Their main jobs are to act during a crisis in the forests and to manage the crowds when there is a man-animal conflict.

Recently, the state saw the influx of large numbers of poaching tribals from Madhya Pradesh. This has quickened the pace at which the team will begin work.

The 555-foot arch dam over the Periyar River in Idukki is the biggest arch damn in Asia and the third tallest dam in India. Built and owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board, it stands between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills. Two other dams were constructed along with this at Cheruthoni and Kulamavu. The Moolamattom Power house near Thodupuzha draws water for power from the 60-sq.km artificial lake created by the three dams.

According to historical records, in 1922, the head of the Araya race, Shri Kolumban revealed the beautiful mountains and the water flow to his friend, the Malankara Estate Superintendent Thomas, during a hunt. A report was submitted to the Government of Travancore in 1932 for the possibility of constructing a dam for power generation. After a detailed survey was made in 1956 and allied paperwork done, the construction of the dam was commissioned in 1969.

With Canadian aid, the scope of construction of the dam was revised and after it was built, the then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi commissioned the commercial operation of the dam on 12 February 1976.

The much controversial Mullaperiyar Dam stands after the confluence of the Mullayar and Periyar rivers in Idukki, and has been so named. In 1886, the then Maharaja of Travancore, forced by the British, signed an indenture with the Secretary of State for India for Periyar irrigation works for a lease period of 999 years. And by this clause, parts of Tamil Nadu such as Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram will be irrigated by the water diverted by the dam and at a later stage, the electricity produced from it. The construction of the dam started in 1887 and it started operations in 1895. It is a masonry gravity dam running a length of 1,200ft and a height of 176ft.

The dam and its reservoirs are located within the Periyar National Park, Thekkady. More than two lakh acres of land is irrigated by the dam’s waters. The water is transported via a 1.6-km tunnel that reaches the Churuliyar and Vaigai rivers in Tamil Nadu.

What To Think Of When You Go Trekking

There are many things to be taken care of before you go trekking. Here’s a list of items you might wanna carry with you. Preparation for the trek is a practical thing to do.

Prepare well

Before you set out, find out as much as you can about your destination and its location, climate and facilities. Find the best season to travel to that particular place. Check out if there are forest watch towers or camps, in case of an emergency. It’s good to know the animals you might come across on a trek – try to read up about them.

Wear the right clothes

Light, airy clothes are best suited to go trekking. Have a well-ventilated, waterproof jacket with lots of pockets and a hood, preferably. It should be layered to stand the weather. Dark khaki trousers and a T-shirt will be perfect. Jeans are usually heavy to walk around in, especially if you’re gonna climb a hill or mountain. But if you can manage a not-too-heavy one, then go ahead. If it’s winter you plan to trek in, then the clothes need to be thicker and padded well.

Proper footwear for comfort

Walking shoes give you comfort and flexibility for walking. And they aren’t heavy either. But firm boots help you when you go walking in rocky terrain, supporting your feet and ankles well. It is also good for slippery and muddy areas. Don’t forget to pack extra pairs of socks.

Navigation

Maps are the most important pieces of paper to be carried along for a trek. Use updated, detailed maps and photos to guide you to your destination. A compass and GPS device will also be great.

Accessories

A backpack is handy for those who plan to trek for more than a few hours. For a longer trek you need to carry water bottles, sunscreen, medicines and, probably, mosquito repellants. A headlamp or a small torch is a good option to have on your person. Sleeping bags and mats are practical if you plan for overnight or weekend treks.

You might want to buy locks to secure your bag on a long trek. Carry a camera and a small notepad to document your trip.

Extras

If the trail is long, then keep a walking stick with you; more than helping you walk, it’ll come in handy to clear a path or drive away wild animals.

Munchies and light snacks will keep you going in case you wander off-trail or are stuck in a place without food.

Wagamon, in Kerala’s Idukki district, is a picturesque area on the district’s border with Kottayam. There are a lot of opportunities for nature-based tourism in Wagamon, and that’s precisely the reason the District Tourism Promotion Council plans to extend that potential by promoting 20 sporting events in a specified adventure zone.

The DTPC has identified 45 hectares of land at Wagamon for the purpose. Wagamon is the third most famous and major tourism destination in Kerala, after Munnar and Thekkady. Nearby towns will also be developed. The project details will be submitted to the government in a month.

Already in place are two sightseeing trips starting from Munnar. The plan proposes to conduct sightseeing tours around Wagamon soon.
