Koshys Homestay
This nice, tiled homestay is just a kilometre from Kumily. You can see the Kurisumala hills in the background. The double-bedded, bath-attached rooms on the first floor are left for the guests. You can choose from hill view rooms, couple’s rooms and kid’s rooms. There’s a kitchen and dining room for the guests’ use. Guests can relax in the common area, garden and the library. On the rooftop you can relax or just watch the views around.
The food is absolutely delicious and warming. You can tell the hosts which dishes you want for lunch and dinner. The hosts Koshy and Remani love to spend time talking and interacting with guests. Dr Zachariah Koshy, after many years of work in the ministry, settled in Periyar. The family is associated with the Periyar Eco Tourism Foundation to promote forest-related activities. The income generated from the homestay is used to fund the Horticulture Society, where the villagers are trained in developing home vegetable gardens.
Solar heater is used in the house. The hosts employ villagers as helpers. Milk is bought from the nearby farm and the vegetables come from their own organic farm. Guests can learn about local village life from the tribal guides and locals around. The homestay offers a complementary visit to the Mannan Tribal colony to all guests. They also help the tribals by selling the products hand made by them.
The surroundings of the homestay are kept spic and span and the hosts promote a plastic-free area. There’s a wormi- compost unit for waste food items and use the compost for our vegetable garden.
There’s a lot to do in Thekkady – trekking, jungle safaris, bamboo rafting, boating, spice plantation and vineyard visit and nature walks.
